Zero CO2 emissions ‘spaceplane’ parts to be manufactured in Sydney

January 13, 2022 by Editor Leave a Comment

Aerospace engineering startup Hypersonix Launch Systems has signed a Master Research Collaboration Agreement (MRCA) with the University of Sydney to research and manufacture the components of a zero emissions, hypersonic spaceplane – a launch vehicle capable of deploying small satellites into low earth orbit (LEO).

Named Delta Velos, the vehicle will be powered by four green hydrogen-fuelled scramjet engines, enabling carbon neutral propulsion.

It will also include the world’s first 3-D printed fixed geometry (no moving parts) scramjet engine in Australia, completed under the Australian Commercialisation grant awarded to Hypersonix in August 2020. [Read more…] about Zero CO2 emissions ‘spaceplane’ parts to be manufactured in Sydney

Ripeta joins the Digital Science family

June 14, 2021 by Editor

UK Digital Science, a technology company serving stakeholders across the research ecosystem, is pleased to announce that it has fully acquired ripeta, an AI-based company aiming to help build trust in science.

This is a natural development based on Digital Science’s previous support and investment in the US-based start-up, which aims to make research more reproducible by identifying and highlighting elements of scholarly manuscripts that either appear to be difficult to reproduce or where additional provenance would increase the trust that can be placed in the paper.

Ripeta’s software uses sophisticated machine-learning and natural language processing algorithms to evaluate research manuscripts for evidence of reproducibility. In our data-rich research environment, excellence of communication of research ideas is increasingly tied to transparent presentation.

This includes appropriate referencing of techniques, methods and underlying data. Better research communication is essential for research to have its maximum impact. Ripeta aims to build trust in the research, its associated data, and the authors. [Read more…] about Ripeta joins the Digital Science family

Printing a better microgrid

June 4, 2021 by Editor

The future of electronic displays will be thin, flexible and durable. One barrier to this, however, is that one of the most widely used transparent conductors for electronic displays – indium tin oxide (ITO) – doesn’t perform as well on larger areas and can crack and break down with wear.

Indium is also a rare earth mineral, which is relatively scarce, and the process to create ITO requires high energy consumption and expensive equipment.

One emerging alternative is metal “microgrid” conductors. These microgrids can be customized to their application by varying the microgrid width, pitch and thickness, and they can be made with a variety of metals. [Read more…] about Printing a better microgrid

New material to treat wounds can protect against resistant bacteria

May 13, 2021 by Editor

Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, have developed a new material that prevents infections in wounds – a specially designed hydrogel, that works against all types of bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant ones.

The new material offers great hope for combating a growing global problem.

The World Health Organization describes antibiotic-resistant bacteria as one of the greatest threats to global health. To deal with the problem, there needs to be a shift in the way we use antibiotics, and new, sustainable medical technologies must be developed. [Read more…] about New material to treat wounds can protect against resistant bacteria

Skoltech researchers propose a new data-driven tool to better understand startups

April 29, 2021 by Editor

Skoltech researchers used Google Trends’ Big Data ensuing from human interactions with the Internet to develop a new methodology – a tool and a data source – for analyzing and researching the growth of startups. A paper reporting these important findings was published in technology management journal, Technological Forecasting and Social Change.

Startups and high-growth technology-based ventures they transform into are regarded as the key drivers of economic development, innovation, and job creation on the national and global level.

However, despite their crucial importance for the economy and high interest from researchers and policy-makers, startups display growth patterns that are difficult to analyze. [Read more…] about Skoltech researchers propose a new data-driven tool to better understand startups

How to get customers to talk about you

March 19, 2021 by Editor

Researchers from Arizona State University, New York University, and Northwestern University published a new paper in the Journal of Marketing that examines how marketers can fuel positive WOM without using explicit incentives.

The study, forthcoming in the Journal of Marketing, is titled “How Marketing Perks Influence Word of Mouth” and is authored by Monika Lisjak, Andrea Bonezzi, and Derek Rucker.

Word-of-mouth (WOM) is arguably the most influential means of persuasion and can be a critical driver of a company’s growth. For this reason, many companies offer consumers incentives to encourage them to generate WOM. [Read more…] about How to get customers to talk about you

Digitizing supply chains to lift farmers out of poverty

September 10, 2020 by Editor Leave a Comment

Millions of cocoa farmers live in poverty across western Africa.

Over the years, these farmers have been forced to contend with geopolitical instability, predatory loan practices, and a general lack of information that hampers their ability to maximize yields and sell crops at fair prices.

Other problems, such as deforestation and child labor, also plague the cocoa industry. [Read more…] about Digitizing supply chains to lift farmers out of poverty
